This year-long focal survey examined the impact of human presence on insect pollinators of CSS, comparing sites of high and low human activity at the San Diego Safari Park. Our results showed that while invasive European Honey bees (A. mellifera) dominated pollinator networks in both sites, there was significant difference in evenness between the sites (Shannon's Diversity Index 0.47 vs 0.84).

Project 4: Insect pollinators of Encinitas Baccharis,  San Diego Botanic Garden

In this study, we compared the accuracy of two different methods of monitoring to assess the flower-visiting insect assemblage and likely pollinators of Encinitas baccharis (Baccharis vanessae): focal observations and video recordings from camera traps. B. vanessae is a rare, endemic species found in Coastal Sage Scrub communities in San Diego County. This federally listed species is threatened by habitat loss and fragmentation, which may also be affecting the availability of its insect pollinators. Results indicate that B. vanessae supports and is supported by a variety of flower-visiting insect groups. The diversity of insect visitors at male and female plants were similar across all diversity measurements. The insect vectors identified were as expected given B. vanessae pollination syndrome.

This study has implications for effective monitoring and conservation of endangered plant species and their affiliated pollinators.

Project 6: Insect pollinator education, Community Montessori Carlsbad

Project 8:  Post-fire CSS insect pollinators, Fallbrook Land Conservancy

Evaluated the impact of wildfires on viable pollination habitat through a combination of in-situ monitoring and an ecosystem services software, InVEST. Using deep learning insect detection methods and crop pollinator models, we aim to provide resource managers with information to inform conservation and restoration practices.

Project 9: Acoustic bat monitoring, Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation

Project 10: Impact of streetlights on CSS nocturnal pollinators, Fallbrook Land Conservancy

Project 11: Propagation of CSS plants with aquaponics, ECOLIFE and Walker’s Wildlands
